Arunachal Flash Floods: Death Toll Rises to Three, Search Continues for Two Missing Persons
The death toll from the rain-triggered flash floods in Arunachal Pradesh’s Keyi Panyor district rose to three on Sunday after rescuers recovered the body of a man from neighbouring Papum Pare district, officials said.
The body of Saurabh Kumar Kharwar was found near Hawa Camp, around 35 km from flood-hit Poosa. A rescue team has been sent to retrieve the mortal remains. Five people went missing after the flash flood struck the region on Wednesday following incessant rainfall.
While three bodies have now been recovered, two people remain missing . Search operations entered the fifth day, with teams carrying out raft operations near the Panyor Lower Hydroelectric Project dam and ground searches around the affected NEEPCO Colony area.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed additional personnel to strengthen rescue efforts, while the Indian Red Cross Society is sending relief supplies to the affected areas, subject to weather conditions.
The flash flood caused widespread destruction in Poosa’s NEEPCO Colony , washing away houses, damaging roads and triggering landslides. Around 30 houses were completely damaged or washed away , while several others suffered partial damage. Officials said 128 households have been affected, with 60 displaced people currently staying at a relief camp.
Meanwhile, floods and landslides have impacted nine districts of Arunachal Pradesh, including Papum Pare, East Siang and Leparada. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in parts of the state, raising concerns over further flash floods, landslides and disruption of connectivity.
