
Asia Argento To Receive Lifetime Honour At Locarno Film Festival 2026
Asia Argento is set to be honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the upcoming Locarno Film Festival 2026, recognising her long-standing contribution to global cinema as both an actress and filmmaker.
According to festival organisers, Argento will also present her latest film, Jorge Thielen Armand’s Death Has No Master , during the Swiss festival dedicated to independent cinema. The award ceremony will take place on August 13 at the iconic Piazza Grande , a lakeside open-air venue in Locarno with a capacity of around 6,500 seats , known for hosting major festival screenings under the night sky. The 79th edition of the festival will run from August 5 to 15, 2026 .
Argento began her screen career at a young age with her debut in Lamberto Bava’s horror film Demons 2 (1986) . She later appeared in notable Italian films including Nanni Moretti’s Palombella rossa (1989) , Carlo Verdone’s comedy Perdiamoci di vista (1994) , and Peter Del Monte’s Traveling Companion (1996) . She also collaborated early in her career with her father, filmmaker Dario Argento, in Trauma (1993) and later starred in The Stendhal Syndrome (1996) .
Her international filmography spans collaborations with some of the world’s most acclaimed directors. These include Patrice Chéreau in Queen Margot , Abel Ferrara in New Rose Hotel and Go Go Tales , Gus Van Sant in Last Days , George A. Romero in Land of the Dead , Sofia Coppola in Marie Antoinette , Olivier Assayas in Boarding Gate , and Catherine Breillat in The Last Mistress . She has also featured in mainstream productions such as xXx , directed by Rob Cohen, and Olivier Megaton’s thriller The Red Siren .
Alongside acting, Argento has built a parallel career as a filmmaker, beginning with her semi-autobiographical directorial debut Scarlet Diva , followed by The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things and Misunderstood , which starred Charlotte Gainsbourg.
Festival artistic director Giona A. Nazzaro described her as “an artist who has constantly reimagined cinema, taking risks and challenging conventions,” highlighting her enduring influence on contemporary filmmaking.
