Asian Games Day 12: India’s Gold Rush! 4 Golds In One Day Take Medal Tally To 60
India enjoyed its most productive day of the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on Wednesday, winning four gold medals and several bronze medals as its overall tally climbed to 60 - 10 gold, 21 silver and 29 bronze. The country also moved into the top eight of the standings, with compound archery producing a historic clean sweep.
The biggest story was India’s domination in compound archery, where all three team gold medals went to the country. Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Chikitha Taniparthi and Prithika Pradeep defeated China 238-234 in the women’s final, matching the world-record score. Chikitha then teamed up with Sahil Jadhav to beat South Korea in a dramatic shoot-off after the mixed-team final ended 157-157. Their victory also secured India its first qualification quota for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics in the compound mixed-team event.
India completed the sweep when Sahil Jadhav, Ganesh Mani Ratnam Thirumuru and Kushal Dalal edged China 238-237 in the men’s compound team final. It gave India three archery golds in a single day and made Chikitha a double gold medallist.
Shooting added another gold through Neeru Dhanda and Kynan Chenai, who won the mixed-team trap event with 34 hits, setting an Asian and Games record. Dhanda became one of India’s standout performers after also winning the individual trap gold earlier in the Games.
Boxing contributed three bronze medals. Priya Ghanghas finished third in the women’s 60kg after losing her semifinal, while Kapil Pokhariya and Narender Berwal secured bronze in the men’s 90kg and 90+kg categories respectively.
Wrestling finally opened its medal account as Sunil Kumar won bronze in Greco-Roman wrestling. The result gave India its first wrestling medal of the Games and his second Asian Games medal in the discipline.
There was more progress in team events. India’s women’s hockey team defeated South Korea 2-0 to reach the final, where it will face China on October 2. The result guarantees India at least silver and keeps alive its chance of direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
In squash, both the Indian men’s and women’s teams reached the semifinals, assuring further medal opportunities. Sumit Nagal also advanced in tennis, while Indian athletes made progress in several other disciplines.
After 12 days, India has 60 medals, including 10 golds, with archery, shooting, boxing, wrestling and hockey now providing major medal opportunities for the final stretch of the Games.
