Assam has added another feather to its rich tea legacy by becoming the first state in India to commercially manufacture Matcha tea , marking a significant milestone for the country's tea industry. The achievement has been made possible by the Chota Tingrai Tea Estate in Tinsukia district , whose first batch of Matcha has already been sold at the Gauhati Tea Auction Centre for Rs 3,000 .

Announcing the development, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the introduction of Matcha production will strengthen the global identity of Assam Tea while opening new opportunities in the fast growing specialty tea market. He added that the achievement reflects the strong collaboration between India and Japan , which has played a key role in bringing authentic Matcha production technology to Assam.

The estate's Director, Mrityunjay Jalan , said the accomplishment is the result of nearly a decade of collaboration with Japanese tea manufacturers, agronomists, equipment suppliers, and tea experts. To ensure authentic production, the estate established a fully automated, state of the art Japanese tea manufacturing facility, combining Assam's centuries old tea growing tradition with advanced Japanese processing techniques.

Traditionally produced in Japan , China , and Vietnam , Matcha is a premium green tea powder that has witnessed soaring global demand in recent years, leading to supply shortages. Industry experts believe this presents a valuable opportunity for India to establish itself in the international specialty tea market.

Jalan said the estate has been producing premium whole leaf green tea for the past ten years, but the launch of authentic Indian Matcha is its biggest achievement yet. He expressed confidence that Matcha from Assam will soon gain popularity in both domestic and overseas markets, adding a new dimension to the state's globally renowned tea industry while creating fresh export opportunities for India.
