Assam Exports GI-Tagged Tezpur Litchis to Singapore, Expands Global Market Reach
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday flagged off a consignment of 500 kg of GI-tagged Tezpur litchis bound for Singapore from the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, marking another step in the state's efforts to promote premium agricultural products in international markets.
The export follows the recent shipment of 1,000 kg of Tezpur litchis to Dubai , reflecting growing overseas demand for the prized 'Piyaji' variety , known for its distinctive flavour and quality.
Speaking on the occasion, Sarma described the export as a proud moment for Assam's farmers and said it demonstrated increasing global recognition of the state's agricultural produce. He noted that such initiatives would encourage more farmers to explore export opportunities while strengthening Assam's presence in global value chains.
The exports have been facilitated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) under the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The latest consignment will be transported to Singapore via a Druk Air flight operating from Bhutan through Guwahati.
According to the Chief Minister, Singapore has already expressed interest in procuring an additional 500 kg of Tezpur litchis . However, limited production remains a challenge, as the fruit is currently harvested from around 3,000 trees and continues to enjoy strong demand within Assam and across India. Horticulture experts estimate that a mature litchi tree can yield 40-100 kg of fruit annually , while well-maintained orchards may produce 80-150 kg per tree , depending on age, variety and growing conditions. Despite this potential, expanding commercial production and export volumes will require increased cultivation and improved orchard management.
Sarma said the success of Tezpur litchis highlights the potential of GI-tag exports as a tool for enhancing the market value of region-specific products and strengthening agricultural branding initiatives. He added that Assam aims to expand exports of other unique products, including kaji nemu (Assam lemon), bhut jolokia (ghost pepper), ginger, and jackfruit , to international destinations.
Emphasising the importance of quality standards, the Chief Minister said export growth would depend on adherence to prescribed cultivation practices and consistency in production. He expressed confidence that Assam's distinctive agricultural products could establish a strong global identity, helping improve farmers' incomes and enhance the state's agricultural export footprint.
