Assam Flood Death Toll Climbs to 75, Over 3.32 Lakh Still Battling the Deluge

Assam's flood situation remained grim on Tuesday as the death toll climbed to 75 after seven more people lost their lives in Sivasagar district, according to the latest bulletin issued by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).

Although the overall flood situation has shown slight improvement with the number of affected people declining from 4.45 lakh on Monday to 3.32 lakh, the disaster continues to disrupt lives across large parts of the state. Officials said no person is currently reported missing, but thousands of families remain displaced.

At present, seven districts, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon, Sonitpur, and Kamrup Metropolitan, continue to face the impact of the floods. The inundation has affected 21 revenue circles and 622 villages, leaving roads, homes and agricultural fields submerged.

Among the worst-hit districts, Charaideo tops the list with 1,42,756 affected residents, followed by Sivasagar (97,074) and Jorhat (57,371). Authorities said floodwaters have damaged infrastructure and disrupted normal life, while residents continue to depend on government assistance.

The state government is operating 81 relief camps, where displaced families have taken shelter. In addition, 34 relief distribution centres are providing food, drinking water and other essential supplies to flood-hit communities.

The floodwaters have also dealt a severe blow to agriculture. According to the ASDMA bulletin, nearly 45,342 hectares of cropland remain submerged, raising concerns over crop losses and the livelihoods of thousands of farmers.

Meanwhile, the Dhansiri (South) River continued to flow above the danger mark at Numaligarh in Golaghat district, keeping authorities on high alert as they closely monitor water levels and the evolving flood situation.

While the number of affected people has fallen compared to previous days, officials warned that the situation remains critical in several districts, with relief, rehabilitation and restoration efforts continuing across the state.
