
Assam Floods Leave 179 Villages Underwater, Centre Vows Comprehensive Relief
The flood situation in Assam remained critical on Wednesday, with more than 48,500 people affected across Biswanath, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh and Nalbari districts, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) . Dhemaji is the worst-hit district, accounting for over 44,000 affected residents , while the state's flood-related death toll this year remains one .
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan , accompanied by Union Minister Kiren Rijiju , visited flood-affected areas in Dhemaji, conducted an aerial survey , and reviewed relief measures with Assam government officials. Chouhan assured that the Centre will provide all necessary assistance for rescue, rehabilitation and reconstruction, adding that he would submit an interim damage assessment to Prime Minister Narendra Modi .
Describing the destruction as extensive, Chouhan said homes, roads, power infrastructure, crops and livestock had suffered heavy losses. He praised the state government's rescue efforts and said a detailed survey would determine the full extent of the damage.
The ASDMA said authorities are operating 13 relief camps and distribution centres , sheltering 153 displaced people , while NDRF and SDRF teams have rescued 713 people , mainly in Dhemaji.
During the past 24 hours, relief agencies distributed 290.95 quintals of rice, 51.23 quintals of pulses, 15.35 quintals of salt , and 1,535.49 litres of mustard oil to affected families.
Across Assam, 179 villages remain inundated and 2,117 hectares of farmland have been damaged. Floodwaters have also affected roads, embankments and bridges, while the Brahmaputra River continues to flow above the danger mark at Neamatighat . More than 82,800 livestock and poultry have also been impacted.
Chouhan said the Centre would extend financial support through disaster relief mechanisms and warned that 12 districts could face further weather-related challenges this year , underscoring the need for sustained preparedness and recovery efforts.
