The flood situation in Assam worsened on Monday, with more than 45,500 people affected across five districts and one person reported missing , prompting intensified rescue and relief operations by the state government.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) , a person was swept away by strong flood currents in Jonai subdivision of Dhemaji district , which remains the worst-hit region with over 41,000 people affected. Floodwaters have also impacted Dibrugarh, Chirang, Lakhimpur, and Nalbari districts, while 257 villages remain submerged.

The disaster has damaged over 4,278 hectares of agricultural land , along with roads, bridges, embankments, and other public infrastructure. The Disang River continues to flow above the danger mark at Nanglamuraghat, raising concerns of further flooding if heavy rainfall persists. More than 76,000 domestic animals and poultry have also been affected.

Amid the worsening crisis, Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to review the situation and assured the state of all possible assistance from the Central government . Sarma said the discussion focused on the extent of flooding in Dhemaji and the ongoing rescue and rehabilitation efforts.

The Chief Minister said Water Resources Minister Susanta Borgohain and Revenue & Disaster Management Minister Keshab Mahanta have been stationed in Dhemaji to supervise relief work and ensure timely assistance reaches affected residents. He added that the government is also strengthening anti-erosion measures and working to restore disrupted transport links in flood-hit areas.

State authorities are currently operating 12 relief camps and relief distribution centres , sheltering 655 displaced people . Over the past 24 hours, officials have distributed essential supplies, including rice, pulses, salt, and mustard oil , to flood-affected families.

With rivers continuing to swell and weather conditions remaining uncertain, authorities are closely monitoring the situation as rescue teams remain on alert across vulnerable districts.
