Assam polls: Himanta fixes March 10 as fresh deadline for NDA seat-sharing
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has set March 10 as the new deadline to finalise the NDA’s seat sharing arrangement for the upcoming Assembly elections , indicating that discussions within the ruling coalition are still underway.
Speaking in Guwahati, Sarma said talks with key allies are in the final stages. Negotiations with the Bodoland People's Front are expected to conclude shortly, while discussions with the Asom Gana Parishad are likely to be wrapped up by March 9 or 10 . He expressed confidence that the alliance will be formally announced once these consultations are completed.
The Chief Minister confirmed that the seat sharing arrangement with the Rabha Hasong Joutha Sangram Samiti has already been finalised. However, he said the ongoing Rajya Sabha elections have prompted NDA partners to move cautiously before making a public declaration.
The ruling coalition in the 126 member Assembly includes the Bharatiya Janata Party, AGP, United People's Party Liberal and BPF . The revised timeline also comes in the backdrop of the 2023 delimitation exercise , which altered constituency boundaries and seat categories.
The Assembly elections are expected to be held in March or April 2026 , with the schedule to be announced by the Election Commission of India.
