Assam Rifles, Manipur Police Nab Four Militants in Chandel Border Operation

Security forces have arrested four armed militants belonging to two banned outfits from the India-Myanmar border area in Manipur’s Chandel district, police said on Thursday.

The arrests were made on Tuesday during a joint search operation conducted by the Assam Rifles and Manipur Police near Border Pillar 59 at Aivomjang village. The operation was launched following continuous surveillance and credible intelligence inputs about the presence of armed cadres in the area, a senior police officer said.

According to an Assam Rifles statement, the four militants had entered Indian territory and were attempting to move back towards Myanmar when security personnel intercepted them and thwarted their attempt to escape.

Those arrested include three members of the proscribed United National Liberation Front (Koireng) and one cadre of the outlawed People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK). The security forces also recovered Myanmar currency notes from their possession, the officer said.

Following their apprehension, the four militants were handed over to Molcham Police Station for further legal proceedings. Authorities are expected to investigate their activities, movements and possible links with other members of the banned outfits.

Security forces have maintained a heightened presence and continued search operations across Manipur since ethnic violence erupted in May 2023. The prolonged conflict between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities has resulted in significant loss of life and displacement.

More than 260 people have been killed, while thousands have been forced to leave their homes since the violence began. Security agencies have continued operations aimed at locating armed groups, recovering weapons and preventing militants from exploiting the porous India-Myanmar border for movement and shelter.

The latest arrests highlight the continued security challenges along Manipur’s border areas, where authorities remain focused on preventing the movement of armed cadres and maintaining security amid the state’s ongoing efforts to restore stability.
