Australia Crush West Indies by 8 Wickets, Storm Into Women's T20 World Cup Final
Australia continued their remarkable dominance in world cricket with a commanding eight wicket victory over the West Indies in the Women's T20 World Cup semifinal at The Oval in London on Tuesday, securing yet another place in the tournament final.
Chasing a modest target of 126 , the defending champions barely broke a sweat as they reached 127-2 in just 13 overs , finishing the contest with seven overs to spare . The convincing victory keeps Australia's unbeaten run intact and puts them one step away from lifting a record extending seventh Women's T20 World Cup title .
After an early wobble that saw openers Georgia Voll and Phoebe Litchfield dismissed inside the powerplay, Beth Mooney once again anchored Australia's innings with a brilliant unbeaten 61 off 36 balls . The left hander struck crisp boundaries all around the ground and registered her eighth Women's T20 World Cup half century , equalling the tournament record held by Suzie Bates .
Mooney found the perfect partner in Ash Gardner , whose aggressive unbeaten 35 off 20 balls ensured Australia never allowed the West Indies back into the contest. Their unbroken 63 run partnership from just 37 deliveries completely shifted the momentum, with Gardner sealing victory by flicking the winning boundary.
Earlier, Australia's bowlers had laid the foundation for the comfortable chase by restricting the West Indies to 125-7 . The Caribbean side struggled to build momentum throughout the innings as Australia's disciplined attack consistently picked up wickets.
Gardner proved equally effective with the ball, delivering a match winning spell of 2-13 . The all rounder removed Jahzara Claxton and veteran Stafanie Taylor in the same over, putting the brakes on the West Indies' scoring. Captain Sophie Molineux also claimed 2-30 , while Georgia Wareham impressed with 2-17 , including the crucial wicket of skipper Hayley Matthews .
Matthews, who had previously produced match winning knocks against Australia, managed only 30 off 28 balls this time. Opener Qiana Joseph struggled for fluency before departing for 16 off 22 balls , leaving the West Indies searching for momentum.
The Caribbean side also suffered a major setback before the match even began. Star all rounder Deandra Dottin appeared unwell during the national anthem and had to be helped off the field by teammates, creating concern in the West Indies camp. She eventually returned later in the innings and provided some late fireworks with an unbeaten 26 off just 16 balls , but the effort came too late to change the outcome.
Australia also faced a brief injury concern when veteran Ellyse Perry retired hurt on 2 because of a precautionary quad issue. However, captain Molineux later expressed confidence that Perry would be fit for the final.
Reflecting on another dominant performance, Molineux praised her team's composure throughout the tournament.
"The T20 World Cup is all about handling momentum swings, and the group has really enjoyed the journey so far," she said after the match.
Australia will now play the winner of the second semifinal between England and South Africa at Lord's on Sunday. Having reached their eighth Women's T20 World Cup final in ten editions , the Australians will once again start as favourites as they chase another historic global title.
