Australia made a winning start to its FIFA World Cup campaign, defeating Turkey 2-0 in Vancouver on Saturday and dampening the European side's long-awaited return to football's biggest stage after 24 years.

Goals from Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe , along with an inspired performance from goalkeeper Patrick Beach , helped the Socceroos secure all three points in their Group D opener.

Turkey entered the tournament with high hopes after qualifying for its first World Cup since its memorable semifinal run in 2002 . However, Australia's experience on the global stage proved decisive from the outset.

The breakthrough came in the 27th minute when Irankunda raced through a crowded defense and fired a low shot into the net. The goal arrived shortly after a hydration break and gave Australia control of the contest. The 20-year-old forward, who plays for Watford , celebrated by punching the corner flag in tribute to Australian football legend Tim Cahill . His strike also made him the youngest player to score for Australia at a World Cup.

Turkey pushed hard for an equaliser, but Beach , selected ahead of veteran goalkeeper Matthew Ryan , repeatedly came to Australia's rescue. The goalkeeper denied Abdulkerim Bardakci from distance before producing another fine save to stop Arda Güler's dangerous free kick early in the second half.

The Turks introduced Kenan Yildiz after the break in an attempt to increase their attacking threat, but Australia remained disciplined and difficult to break down.

The decisive second goal arrived in the 75th minute when Metcalfe capitalised on a costly turnover by Ismail Yüksek and calmly slotted home to double Australia's advantage.

Beach finished the match with eight saves, capping a memorable night for the Socceroos. The victory continues Australia's strong World Cup tradition, while Turkey will now need a positive result in its next match to keep its hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive in a group that also includes the United States and Paraguay .
