Babar Azam Returns as Pakistan Test Captain, Shan Masood Axed After Poor Run

Pakistan Cricket has once again placed its faith in Babar Azam , reinstating him as the captain of the Test side after removing Shan Masood following a disappointing run of results. The decision was announced on Sunday, with Babar set to begin his second stint as skipper during Pakistan's upcoming two Test series against the West Indies later this month.

Masood's removal follows a difficult tenure that saw Pakistan win only four of the 16 Tests played under his leadership while losing 12 matches . Despite contributing with the bat, including two centuries and seven half centuries , the team's poor performances ultimately led the selectors to make a change.

Chief selector Aaqib Javed said the selection committee unanimously backed Babar's return, believing he was the best choice to lead the side forward. He added that Pakistan needed stronger leadership to improve results, noting that a Test captain's role extends beyond personal performances to tactical decisions, over rates, DRS calls and guiding the team in crucial moments.

Pakistan endured several disappointing series during Masood's captaincy, including a 3-0 defeat in Australia , a historic 2-0 home loss to Bangladesh , defeats against South Africa and the West Indies , and a last place finish in the previous World Test Championship cycle. The team's lone series triumph came in a 2-1 home victory over England .

Babar previously captained Pakistan in 20 Tests , winning 10 , including memorable series victories over South Africa , Bangladesh and Sri Lanka . Although Masood has lost the captaincy, he has retained his place in the squad for the West Indies tour.
