Baby Indian Rock Python Rescued From Janshatabdi Express Engine at Mumbai CSMT
A baby Indian Rock Python was safely rescued from the locomotive cabin of the Madgaon–CSMT Janshatabdi Express after the train arrived at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai, highlighting the growing incidence of wildlife entering urban transport infrastructure during the monsoon season.
According to Central Railway , Train No. 12052 reached Platform 11 at around 12.45 am on June 24 when loco pilot N.K. Parsoya noticed the reptile inside the Mumbai-end cabin of the engine. He immediately alerted reliever loco pilot Omprakash Ram and railway authorities. Honorary Animal Welfare Officer Abhishek Ashok Thavre subsequently reached the station and rescued the python hatchling at around 1.40 am without affecting train operations. The snake was later released into its natural habitat.
Central Railway Chief Public Relations Officer Dr. Swapnil Nila said the reptile was spotted shortly after the train's arrival and praised the alertness of railway staff and the swift response that ensured both passenger safety and wildlife protection. The rescue operation has since drawn widespread attention, with videos of the incident circulating on social media.
Wildlife experts noted that June is the peak hatching season for the Indian Rock Python , a non-venomous species protected under the Wildlife Protection Act . During heavy monsoon rains, young reptiles frequently seek shelter in buildings, vehicles and enclosed spaces. Officials suspect the hatchling entered the locomotive while escaping the rain and was inadvertently transported to Mumbai.
The incident comes days after a Russell's viper was rescued from Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex Metro Station , underscoring increased wildlife movement into urban areas during the rainy season.
