Balogun Fires USA Past Bosnia 1-0, but Red Card Clouds Round of 16 Clash
The United States booked its place in the next stage of the FIFA World Cup with a hard fought 1-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32, but the triumph came with a significant setback as match winner Folarin Balogun was sent off early in the second half.
Balogun delivered the decisive moment just before halftime after a tense opening period. A move initiated by Malik Tillman took a fortunate deflection off Bosnian defenders Stjepan Radeljic and Tarik Muharemovic , allowing the striker to latch onto the loose ball. He calmly guided a left footed finish past goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj , scoring his third goal of the tournament and 12th international goal for the United States.
The goal came after an earlier effort from Balogun had been ruled out for offside in the 31st minute. On both occasions, he celebrated with LeBron James' famous "The Silencer" gesture, a tribute that even the NBA legend acknowledged on social media after the goal stood.
However, Balogun's memorable night quickly took a dramatic turn. Early in the second half, he was involved in a challenge with Muharemovic, appearing to step on the defender's ankle. Brazilian referee Raphael Claus initially let play continue without punishment, but after a VAR review, the decision was upgraded to a straight red card, forcing the Americans to play the remainder of the match with ten men.
The dismissal means Balogun will miss the Round of 16 clash against Belgium if the United States progresses further in the tournament.
Despite the sending off, Balogun achieved another milestone by equalling Landon Donovan's tally of three goals in a single World Cup, the second highest by an American player. Only Bert Patenaude , who scored four goals in the inaugural 1930 tournament, has managed more.
The victory keeps the United States' World Cup dream alive, though Balogun's suspension leaves the team facing a major challenge ahead of the knockout stages.
