Bandi Sanjay Alleges Misuse of Voter Roll Revision Exercise in Telangana
Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar on Saturday accused the Telangana government of misusing the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls for political purposes and alleged that the exercise was being used to target Hindu voters.
Addressing the media in Vemulawada of Jagtial district, the BJP leader claimed that the voter verification drive, initiated by the Election Commission to ensure accurate electoral rolls, was being improperly handled by the state administration.
According to Sanjay, the revision exercise was intended to improve the transparency and accuracy of voter lists, but was allegedly being diverted from its original objective. He urged members of the Hindu community to remain vigilant and actively participate in the process.
The Union minister alleged that the ongoing exercise was resulting in the removal of Hindu voters from electoral rolls and warned that any lack of public awareness could have long-term political consequences. He also claimed that field-level personnel involved in the revision process were capable of carrying out their responsibilities efficiently but were not receiving adequate support from the state government and senior officials.
Sanjay further accused the ruling Congress of pursuing vote-bank politics and alleged that it was working in tandem with the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) to influence the voter revision process. He also claimed that attempts to identify and remove ineligible voters, including alleged Rohingya immigrants, were being obstructed in certain areas.
The allegations come amid a continuing political debate over the voter roll revision exercise in Telangana, with both the ruling party and opposition trading charges over its implementation.
Meanwhile, the office of the Telangana Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) said the revision process is progressing as scheduled. According to CEO C. Sudharshan Reddy , more than 28.8 million enumeration forms , representing about 85 per cent of the targeted coverage , have been distributed across the state since the exercise began on June 25.
The door-to-door verification and form distribution campaign will continue until July 24 , following which a draft electoral roll will be published on July 31 . Objections and claims received thereafter will be examined before the final electoral roll is released on October 1 , officials said.
The Election Commission has maintained that the revision exercise is being conducted strictly in accordance with established procedures and with full transparency, despite the political controversy surrounding the process.
