Bangladesh and China have elevated their bilateral relationship to its "highest level" following Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's visit to Beijing, marking a major expansion of strategic, economic and diplomatic cooperation .

Speaking after the prime minister's return, Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman described the visit as a "landmark upgrade" , saying it reflects Bangladesh's growing strategic importance in China's regional diplomacy. The two sides agreed to institutionalise a foreign minister-level strategic dialogue and launch a 2+2 mechanism involving diplomatic and defence officials.

Bangladesh and China reaffirmed cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) , with progress on the Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project (TRCMRP) , as China pledged support and both countries agreed to fast-track its feasibility study. The Teesta project is strategically significant as the river flows through India before entering Bangladesh and lies near the Siliguri Corridor , India's critical land link to its northeastern states.

The two countries also agreed to expedite the Mongla Port Modernisation and Expansion Project and the Chinese Economic and Industrial Zone in Chattogram.

During the visit, Prime Minister Rahman met President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang . The two sides signed eight MoUs, three agreements, one protocol and a Joint Action Plan covering trade, investment, agriculture, education, development cooperation and media.

The upgraded ties underscore Bangladesh's push to attract Chinese investment and strengthen infrastructure development, while expanding diplomatic and defence engagement. For China, the partnership reinforces its influence in South Asia and the Bay of Bengal under the BRI. The growing cooperation, particularly on the Teesta project, is expected to be closely watched by India due to its regional strategic implications.
