Barapullah Phase 3 Set to Open September 29, Linking Mayur Vihar to AIIMS

The much-awaited Barapullah Phase 3 corridor is expected to be inaugurated on September 29, PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh said on Saturday. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta are expected to attend the inauguration.

The project will provide signal-free connectivity between Mayur Vihar Phase 1 and AIIMS through elevated carriageways, linking East and South Delhi. The new flyover will merge with the existing Barapullah flyover at Sarai Kale Khan, completing a stretch of around 9 km.

According to officials, both ramps of the elevated corridor have been completed. One ramp extends from the Mayur Vihar side, while the other continues from the existing corridor near Sarai Kale Khan.

The Public Works Department has also completed an extra-dosed bridge over the Yamuna, which will connect and support the corridor.

Singh said the project includes a dedicated cycle track, describing it as the first time in India that a flyover corridor has been designed with such a facility. The project also includes pedestrian-friendly infrastructure and modern urban design elements.

The cycle track is part of the corridor’s infrastructure alongside the elevated carriageways, while pedestrian facilities have also been incorporated into the project.

The Barapullah Phase 3 project was originally approved in 2014 and work began in 2015. It was initially scheduled for completion in 2017 but faced multiple delays and significant cost overruns.

The revised project cost has now risen to approximately Rs 1,635 crore, according to the PTI report.

The corridor is part of the Barapullah network and will connect the Mayur Vihar side with the existing elevated route near Sarai Kale Khan. Once opened, it will provide a continuous elevated connection towards AIIMS through the Barapullah corridor.

The project’s September 29 inauguration is expected to mark the opening of the long-delayed Phase 3 section, which includes the completed elevated ramps and the Yamuna bridge.

The project combines vehicular connectivity, cycling infrastructure and pedestrian facilities as part of the corridor connecting East and South Delhi.
