Mexican authorities have intensified their search for a mysterious vigilante dubbed the “Batman of Lagos de Moreno” , who is accused of taking the law into his own hands by chasing suspected motorbike thieves and tying them to lampposts in public view, triggering a wider debate on citizen justice and law enforcement gaps in the violence-hit state of Jalisco.

According to police and multiple local reports, at least five men were found duct-taped to street poles over a span of roughly 10 to 14 days beginning June 13 in Lagos de Moreno , a town in central Jalisco. The victims were allegedly marked with written insults, drawn moustaches and whiskers, and the word “thief,” while stolen motorcycles were placed nearby as a form of public display of alleged wrongdoing.

Journalist Luis Cárdenas shared viral images of the incidents, which showed multiple restrained individuals, including one case where two men were tied back-to-back with a sign placed above them. The pattern of similar incidents has led investigators to believe a single individual or coordinated group may be responsible.

State Security Secretary Juan Pablo Hernández has confirmed that authorities are treating the individuals as victims while continuing to investigate the allegations of theft separately. Officials have also identified two vehicles believed to be connected to the vigilante’s movements, though no arrests have been made so far.

Reports also indicate that some of the restrained individuals showed signs of physical assault and were later treated for injuries after being freed by authorities. The case has amplified public discussion in Mexico over rising motorcycle theft , perceived impunity, and the growing tendency toward vigilante-style enforcement amid broader insecurity linked to organised criminal activity in parts of Jalisco.

While sympathy exists in some local narratives for anti-theft actions, authorities have warned that such extrajudicial punishment undermines due process and will be prosecuted under law. The identity of the so-called “Batman” remains unknown, and the investigation is ongoing with no confirmed breakthrough.
