BC Gurukuls Get Digital Boost, Student Welfare Push in Telangana
In a major push to strengthen educational opportunities for students from Backward Classes (BCs) , the Telangana Government has approved a series of landmark reforms for the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Telangana BC Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society (MJPTBCWREIS) . The measures are aimed at improving academic standards, expanding digital infrastructure, promoting higher education, and enhancing student welfare.
The decisions were taken during the 6th Board of Governors meeting , chaired by BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar at the State Secretariat. The Minister said the reforms are designed to transform BC Gurukul institutions into centres of excellence capable of competing with the country's best residential education systems.
One of the key decisions is the renaming of the society. It will now officially be known as the Telangana Backward Classes Welfare Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Educational Institutions Society , reflecting its expanded educational vision and commitment to empowering students from socially and economically disadvantaged communities.
In another significant move, the Board approved a new admission policy for the society's Agricultural College , reserving admissions exclusively for students who have completed their education in MJP institutions. The initiative is expected to create greater opportunities for rural and first-generation learners to pursue agricultural sciences and build careers in the sector.
To encourage academic excellence, the government has also announced free laptops for students from BC Gurukul institutions who secure admission to premier institutions such as the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and National Institutes of Technology (NITs) . The initiative aims to bridge the digital divide by providing students with the tools needed for advanced learning, research and skill development.
The Board also approved a comprehensive upgrade of digital infrastructure across Gurukul schools and junior colleges. New desktop computers will be installed in schools, while interactive flat panels will be introduced in junior colleges to support technology-enabled classrooms and modern teaching methods. The government will further strengthen its academic monitoring system to improve teaching quality and ensure better learning outcomes.
In a major welfare initiative, the government approved an ex gratia of ₹2 lakh for the families of students who die due to unforeseen circumstances while studying in BC Gurukul institutions. The financial assistance is intended to provide immediate relief to bereaved families during difficult times.
Over the past few years, MJPTBCWREIS has emerged as one of Telangana's largest residential education networks, with its students consistently earning admissions to prestigious institutions across the country. The latest reforms are expected to further strengthen the Gurukul ecosystem by combining quality education, digital learning and student welfare under a single framework.
Expressing confidence in the reforms, Ponnam Prabhakar said the government's priority is to provide world-class educational opportunities to BC students and equip them with the knowledge, skills and technological resources needed to excel in higher education and competitive careers.
