BCCI Opens Race For Agarkar’s Successor As Men’s Selection Committee Vacancy Goes Up For Grabs

The BCCI has opened the search for a new member of the men’s national selection committee following the end of Ajit Agarkar’s tenure as chairman of selectors, setting the stage for a change in India’s cricket selection setup.

The cricket board on Tuesday invited applications for one position on the men’s selection committee. Agarkar’s tenure officially ended on October 4, after the former India pacer informed the BCCI shortly before its Annual General Meeting on September 18 that he would not seek an extension.

Agarkar’s departure leaves a vacancy in a panel that plays a crucial role in shaping India’s teams across formats, including decisions on player selection, squad composition and the identification of emerging talent.

For now, former India spinner Pragyan Ojha is serving as the interim chairman of selectors. The current panel also includes Shiv Sundar Das, Ajay Ratra and RP Singh.

The BCCI announced the opening through its official website, saying it was inviting applications for one position on the Men’s Selection Committee.

The appointment assumes significance as India’s selectors remain at the centre of major decisions involving the national team, with the panel expected to balance established stars with younger players competing for places.

Agarkar, a former India fast bowler, took over as chairman of the selection committee in 2023. His tenure included several important selection calls across India’s international campaigns and the transition involving different generations of players.

With the BCCI now beginning the formal process to fill the vacancy, attention will turn to the eligibility requirements and the eventual choice of Agarkar’s successor. The new appointee will join an existing panel that will continue to oversee selection matters for the men’s national side.

The board’s decision marks the beginning of a new phase for India’s selection committee after Agarkar’s exit.
