BCCI Tightens Grip, Bans Smart Sunglasses in IPL Over Security Concerns

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has tightened its security protocols in the Indian Premier League (IPL) , banning the use of smart sunglasses by players, support staff, and match officials inside the Players and Match Officials Area (PMOA) . The move comes from the BCCI Anti Corruption Unit , which flagged the devices as a potential security risk due to their advanced communication and recording features.

According to an advisory issued to franchises, the board noted that certain companies have been marketing smart sunglasses to players and team personnel. These devices are capable of live streaming, audio and video calling, messaging, and data transmission through mobile networks or Wi Fi, raising serious concerns about misuse within restricted zones.

The BCCI stated that under the PMOA Minimum Standards , such smart goggles or glasses are classified as both audio and video recording devices as well as communication tools. As a result, their possession and use inside the PMOA has been strictly prohibited.

All players, support staff, and match officials have now been instructed to deposit smart sunglasses along with mobile phones and smartwatches with the Security Liaison Officer (SLO) before entering match day areas. The board has made it clear that any failure to comply will be treated as a breach of protocol and could lead to penalties under IPL regulations.

The decision comes amid a series of recent disciplinary concerns in the league. Earlier, Rajasthan Royals team member Romi Bhinder was fined ₹1 lakh and warned after being spotted using a mobile phone in the dugout during a match.

In recent weeks, the BCCI has also introduced stricter off field rules, including restrictions on late night movement without security clearance and limits on outside guests in team hotel rooms, citing security concerns and risks of unauthorized contact.

With the latest move, the board has signaled a zero tolerance approach toward any technology that could compromise the integrity and security of the IPL, especially within controlled team environments.
