BCCI to Name New Selection Committee Chairman After October 4

The BCCI will wait until after October 4 to decide on the successor to Ajit Agarkar as chairman of the senior men's selection committee, secretary Devajit Saikia has confirmed, bringing greater clarity to a succession process that has been under discussion for several months.

Agarkar's three-year contract expires on October 4, and he informed the BCCI on September 18 that he does not wish to seek an extension. Saikia said the Board has “sufficient time” until the expiry of the current term and will decide on the vacant position after October 4 before announcing its decision publicly.

The development marks a shift from earlier expectations that Agarkar could continue until the 2027 ODI World Cup. Reports said the BCCI had considered retaining him, while Agarkar had reportedly discussed his future with officials in February 2026, indicating that alternatives could be considered when his contract ended. His September decision subsequently turned the issue into a succession exercise.

The matter gained momentum at the BCCI's 95th AGM on September 18, when office-bearers were authorised to take decisions concerning the selection committees. Agarkar, appointed in July 2023, has overseen a significant period that included India's 2024 T20 World Cup triumph and 2025 Champions Trophy victory, along with major changes in the national team's leadership and squad composition.

Media reports have linked Parthiv Patel and Pragyan Ojha to the succession race, although the BCCI has not confirmed a shortlist. Ojha is already part of the five-member senior selection committee, alongside Shiv Sundar Das, Ajay Ratra and R. P. Singh. The BCCI's established selection process has involved the Cricket Advisory Committee, while eligibility rules for senior selectors include playing at least seven Tests, 30 first-class matches, or 10 ODIs and 20 first-class matches, besides being retired for at least five years.

The timing is significant with India preparing for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Agarkar's tenure expires just one day after India's third ODI against the West Indies on October 3, with five T20Is beginning on October 6. Meanwhile, Saikia has also expressed hope that India's men's team will emulate the women's side's Asian Games gold, with the men's campaign beginning on September 28 and the final scheduled for October 3.

For now, October 4 is the key transition date, but the BCCI has made clear that the successor will be decided only after Agarkar's contract ends.
