Berlin Doctor Sentenced to Life for Murdering 15 Seriously Ill Patients
A German court has sentenced a 41-year-old doctor to life imprisonment after convicting him of murdering 15 patients who were receiving palliative care, bringing to a close one of the country's most disturbing medical crime trials in recent years.
The physician, identified only as Johannes M in accordance with Germany's privacy laws, was found guilty of killing 12 women and three men between September 2021 and July 2024 while working as part of an end-of-life care team attached to a Berlin nursing service.
The court ruled that the doctor administered a lethal combination of medications to patients without their knowledge or consent during home visits. Prosecutors said the drugs included an anesthetic and a muscle relaxant that paralysed the respiratory muscles, causing respiratory arrest and death within minutes.
Judges also found that the doctor bore particularly severe guilt , a designation that significantly reduces the possibility of early release. In addition, the court ordered a lifetime ban on practising medicine .
The case began when investigators became suspicious about the deaths of four patients. As the inquiry expanded, prosecutors linked the doctor to 15 killings and alleged that he had set fire to some victims' homes in an attempt to conceal the crimes.
After remaining silent for months, the doctor confessed during the trial to killing a dozen seriously ill patients, claiming he had persuaded himself that he was relieving their suffering. He later apologised to the victims' families.
The victims ranged in age from 25 to 94 , and most died in their own homes. Authorities continue to investigate dozens of additional cases, with prosecutors indicating that further charges could be filed. The verdict has reignited debate in Germany over patient protection and oversight within palliative and home-care services.
