Beyond Mining: IIT ISM’s Journey to Global Recognition
IIT (Indian School of Mines) Dhanbad has achieved a historic milestone by entering the prestigious QS World University Rankings 2027 for the first time in its nearly 100-year history. The institute has been placed in the 701–710 global rank band , marking a significant step in its evolution from a specialized mining institution to a globally recognized centre for higher education and research. Among the 52 Indian institutions featured in the rankings, IIT (ISM) secured the 21st position nationally and ranked 11th among the 13 IITs included in the list.
The achievement reflects the institute’s growing reputation for academic excellence, research impact, and international engagement. Speaking on the milestone, Director Sukumar Mishra described the ranking as a landmark moment for the institution, highlighting its emergence on the global academic stage. The recognition comes at a time when Indian universities are steadily improving their visibility and competitiveness in international rankings.
Originally established in 1926 as the Indian School of Mines , the institution was modeled on London’s Royal School of Mines and was primarily focused on mining and earth sciences. Over the decades, it developed into India’s leading institution in the field. However, after being granted IIT status in 2016, the institute broadened its academic and research portfolio, introducing programmes in areas such as artificial intelligence, data science, advanced manufacturing, energy engineering, and environmental sciences. Its debut in the QS rankings is seen as evidence of this successful transformation.
A major contributor to the institute’s performance is its strong research output. IIT (ISM) earned an impressive 87.3 score in Citations per Faculty , one of the strongest indicators of research quality and influence. The score suggests that research conducted by its faculty is widely referenced by scholars across the world. The institute also recorded a 43.2 score in International Research Network , reflecting expanding collaborations with universities and research organizations worldwide. In addition, its Sustainability score of 57.5 highlights efforts to promote environmentally responsible growth and socially relevant research. Together, these indicators demonstrate the institution’s commitment to building a globally connected and research-intensive academic ecosystem.
The rankings also reinforce IIT (ISM)’s leadership in specialized engineering disciplines. In the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026 , the institute was ranked No. 1 in India and 21st globally in Mineral and Mining Engineering , reaffirming its status as a global leader in the field. It also secured a place in the 151–175 global band for Petroleum Engineering , while Mechanical Engineering entered the rankings for the first time, achieving a 501–575 global rank band .
Education experts note that the institute’s achievement is significant not only for Dhanbad but also for India’s higher education sector. With a record number of Indian institutions appearing in the latest QS rankings, IIT (ISM)’s debut underscores the growing global competitiveness of Indian universities. The ranking serves as a validation of years of investment in research, innovation, infrastructure, and international collaboration. For an institution that began as a niche mining school under British India, entering the QS World University Rankings represents both a historic achievement and a strong foundation for future global growth.
