Bhawana Kanth Makes History as India’s First Woman Fighter Combat Leader

Indian Air Force officer Bhawana Kanth has achieved another historic milestone by becoming India’s first woman Fighter Combat Leader, marking a significant step forward for women in the country’s military aviation.

Kanth successfully completed the demanding 20-week Fighter Combat Leader course at the Tactics and Air Combat Development Establishment in Gwalior. The specialised programme is designed to train fighter pilots in advanced aerial warfare, tactical planning and combat leadership.

The qualification is considered among the most challenging achievements in the fighter stream, with only around one in 100 fighter pilots managing to earn the coveted certification. With the qualification, Kanth is now equipped to take on a greater role in planning and leading complex air combat operations.

Her latest achievement adds another chapter to a career that has repeatedly broken barriers. Commissioned into the Indian Air Force in 2016, Kanth was among the first three women fighter pilots inducted into the force, alongside Avani Chaturvedi and Mohana Singh.

Over the years, she has built extensive experience flying frontline fighter aircraft, including the MiG-21 and Su-30MKI. Her operational career has also included flying daytime combat missions in 2019, further demonstrating the expanding role of women in India's fighter fleet.

Kanth also became a familiar face to the nation when she participated in the Republic Day parade in 2021, representing the growing presence of women in the country's armed forces.

The Fighter Combat Leader qualification now places her in a position to contribute to advanced air operations and tactical combat planning, moving beyond the traditional role of a fighter pilot to one involving battlefield leadership.

Kanth’s achievement comes as the Indian armed forces continue to expand opportunities for women across operational and leadership roles. Her journey from one of India’s pioneering women fighter pilots to an elite combat leader reflects the changing face of military aviation and is expected to inspire a new generation of women seeking careers in the armed forces.
