The entry of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s son Nishant Kumar into active politics has been finalised, and the JD(U) will make a formal announcement soon , state minister Sharwan Kumar said on Tuesday.

The senior JD(U) leader stated that Nishant will be given a “bigger responsibility” in the party. He said the decision has been finalised after consultations within the organisation and that the formal announcement will be made in a day or two.

“It is clear now that Nishant Kumar will join active politics. The party will announce it formally soon. Party workers have been demanding his entry for several years and they are upbeat ahead of Holi,” Sharwan Kumar said.

He added that the exact role to be assigned to Nishant will be decided shortly. When asked whether Nishant could be sent to the Rajya Sabha , the minister responded, “Anything can happen,” leaving room for speculation about his future political trajectory.

Sharwan Kumar, who has been a minister in the state cabinet for more than a decade and is considered a close aide of the Chief Minister, said the move reflects internal party consensus.

Other senior leaders also welcomed the development. Social Welfare Minister Madan Sahni said party workers had long been demanding Nishant’s entry into active politics and expressed happiness over the finalisation of the decision.

Rural Works Minister Ashok Choudhary described the development as a “Holi gift” for party workers and supporters. He said Nishant’s participation would strengthen the organisation and bring fresh energy. Choudhary further stated that Nishant is an educated leader holding a BTech degree and described him as a “photocopy” of Nitish Kumar in terms of approach and values.

The move also received support from the BJP, an ally of JD(U) in the NDA alliance . Industries Minister Dilip Jaiswal welcomed the entry of the new generation into politics and thanked the Chief Minister for leading the alliance effectively in recent elections. He said Nishant’s entry with family and party support is a positive development and should be warmly accepted.

Jaiswal added that Nishant is a well-grounded and educated young leader and observed that political developments happen at the right time.

Meanwhile, attention is also focused on the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections from Bihar. Five seats are scheduled to go to polls on March 16 , and the last date for filing nominations is March 5 .

The seats are currently held by JD(U)’s Harivansh Narayan Singh and Ram Nath Thakur, RJD’s Prem Chand Gupta and Amarendra Dhari Singh, and RLM’s Upendra Kushwaha , whose terms are ending.

Based on the present strength of parties in the state legislature, all five seats are expected to go to the ruling NDA . However, the RJD has decided to field candidates to ensure the elections are contested and not decided unopposed.

With Nishant Kumar’s entry into active politics finalised, party leaders see it as a significant organisational development ahead of the Rajya Sabha polls and upcoming political engagements.
