Bihar's ‘Mothers of Courage’ Earns India's Only Cannes SDG Shortlist
A grassroots movement led by mothers in rural Bihar has earned global recognition, with "Mothers of Courage – Shifting Societal Norms, One Conversation at a Time" becoming India's only shortlisted entry in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Lions category at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity 2026 . The achievement has placed a community-driven campaign for girls' education and gender equality from Bihar on one of the world's most prestigious platforms for creativity and social impact.
The project, submitted by Mantra Social Services and ShikshaLokam , both part of the broader Shikshagraha movement , documents a powerful grassroots effort to address school dropouts among girls and combat child marriage through community participation. The initiative is also India's sole shortlisted entry in the Gender Equality sub-category, highlighting the growing international recognition of locally led social change.
At the heart of the campaign is the Shiksha Chaupal , a community engagement model that brings together mothers, fathers, youth, teachers and village leaders to discuss barriers preventing girls from completing their education. Through open dialogue and collective pledges, communities commit to ensuring that girls remain in school and are protected from early marriage. The model aims not only to improve school retention but also to challenge deeply rooted social norms that often restrict educational opportunities for girls.
The impact has been significant. More than 28,000 Shiksha Chaupals have been conducted across 14 districts of Bihar , mobilising over 800,000 citizens around girls' education and gender equality. The movement has also created a network of over 600 Chaupal Didis , local women leaders who facilitate discussions and encourage families to support girls' continued education. Thousands of parents have publicly pledged to keep their daughters in school through Class XII, creating community-level accountability and behavioural change.
The initiative is documented in the eight-minute film "Mothers of Courage" , directed by Vandana R and produced by Butterfly Effect Media . The documentary captures real conversations from villages across Bihar and showcases women who have challenged long-standing traditions. Some fought for their daughters' right to education, while others encouraged daughters-in-law to return to school despite social pressures.
Khushboo Awasthi , Co-founder of Mantra4Change and Chief Curator of Shikshagraha, said the recognition belongs to the mothers and communities that have demonstrated how collective action can create lasting change. Vandana R noted that the film simply documented a movement already unfolding on the ground, with the courage and determination coming from the women themselves.
The recognition is particularly significant because the SDG Lions category rewards campaigns that demonstrate measurable social impact aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals . The Cannes shortlist adds to the project's growing list of honours, including Best Inspirational Film at the Los Angeles Film Awards 2026 and a Silver Award at the ABBY Awards 2026 .
The achievement has also drawn attention to Shikshagraha , a people-powered movement championed by S.D. Shibulal , Co-founder and former CEO of Infosys. Working with more than 30 partner organisations across 16 states and Union Territories , the movement is helping strengthen over 1,17,000 public schools across 35 districts through community participation and local leadership.
From village gatherings in Bihar to global recognition at Cannes, "Mothers of Courage" demonstrates how grassroots conversations can evolve into a powerful movement that advances girls' education, promotes gender equality and drives lasting social transformation.
