BJP Alleges Security Failure After Basara Temple Robbery
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a scathing attack on the Telangana government following a major theft at the revered Basara Sri Gnana Saraswati Temple , one of the state's most prominent pilgrimage centres.
The controversy erupted after unidentified miscreants allegedly broke into a section of the temple complex on Monday night and made away with a silver crown belonging to Goddess Mahankali along with cash from a temple hundi. The incident has triggered concern among devotees and reignited debate over the security of religious institutions across Telangana.
Reacting strongly to the theft, the BJP accused the government led by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy of failing to ensure adequate protection for temple properties. In a post on social media platform X, the party claimed that the burglary reflected serious administrative negligence and exposed weaknesses in the security arrangements at one of the state's most visited temples.
The opposition party questioned how criminals were able to target a sacred shrine and access temple assets despite existing surveillance and security mechanisms. According to the BJP, the incident is not merely a case of theft but an attack on the faith and sentiments of millions of Hindu devotees who visit the temple every year.
The party further argued that if the government cannot safeguard religious institutions and devotees' offerings, it raises broader concerns about public safety and governance. BJP leaders demanded accountability from the authorities responsible for temple security and called for immediate corrective measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Located in Nirmal district , the Basara temple holds immense spiritual significance and attracts thousands of devotees, particularly families who visit to perform the traditional Aksharabhyasam ceremony for children. The shrine is regarded as one of the most important temples dedicated to Goddess Saraswati in the country.
Meanwhile, police have intensified their investigation into the theft. Special teams have been deployed to trace the culprits, while officials are examining evidence collected from the temple premises. The incident has drawn widespread attention, with devotees and political parties alike demanding a thorough probe and stronger security measures at major places of worship.
As the investigation continues, the theft has also sparked a political confrontation between the ruling Congress and the BJP, turning a criminal incident into a wider debate over governance, accountability and the protection of religious institutions.
