The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday intensified its criticism of the opposition alliance, claiming that the INDIA bloc is “dead and buried” after the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) announced it would skip the opposition meeting scheduled in New Delhi on June 8.

The DMK’s decision marks a fresh strain within the opposition grouping. The party said it would not attend the meeting, citing concerns over the Congress party’s recent political alignments, including its association with the Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). The DMK reportedly described the Congress move as a “betrayal of allies” , saying the decision reflects the sentiments of its cadre.

Seizing on the development, BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said the INDIA bloc has “broken into pieces” and exists only in perception. “The INDIA alliance is dead and buried. It may exist on paper and on television screens, but it does not exist in reality,” he said.

Poonawalla further alleged that the Congress has lost trust among regional allies and accused it of political opportunism. He pointed to internal contradictions within the opposition camp, noting that several parties contest against each other in states while projecting unity at the national level.

He cited tensions involving the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, the Indian National Congress, and other regional partners, arguing that the alliance lacks a common political agenda . Referring to the Samajwadi Party, he also claimed it intends to contest elections independently in Uttar Pradesh.

Opposition leaders have not yet issued a coordinated response to the BJP’s remarks or the DMK’s decision to skip the meeting.

There is currently no official indication that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam is considering joining the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The party remains a key regional force in Tamil Nadu and continues to operate within the opposition political space, despite its ongoing differences with Congress.

The latest developments underline continuing internal tensions within the INDIA bloc , as questions persist over coordination and unity among its diverse regional partners.
