BJP Cracks Down on Karnataka MLAs After MLC Election Cross-Voting Controversy

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced that disciplinary action will be taken against its legislators found responsible for cross-voting during the recent Karnataka Legislative Council (MLC) elections , once their identities are confirmed. The statement was made by BJP national general secretary and Karnataka in-charge Radha Mohan Das Agrawal , who reiterated that maintaining party discipline remains a core organisational principle.

Speaking to reporters, Agrawal acknowledged that four BJP legislators had voted against the party line. “The process is underway, and once it is confirmed who cross-voted, necessary action will follow,” he said, stressing that internal accountability is non-negotiable.

The controversy stems from the June 18 MLC elections , in which the ruling Congress secured five of the seven seats , while the BJP won two. Its ally JD(S) failed to win the lone seat it contested. The results indicated cross-voting by some BJP and JD(S) legislators, with Congress receiving 151 votes , exceeding its expected tally of 140.

In legislative politics , cross-voting occurs when elected representatives vote against their party’s official candidate or direction. While secret ballots in certain elections can make identifying dissenters difficult, political parties often treat such acts as breaches of loyalty because they undermine collective strategy and organisational discipline.

Asked whether the episode could trigger changes in the Karnataka BJP leadership, including the state president or Leader of the Opposition, Agrawal said no such decision was known to him.

He also reaffirmed that the BJP and JD(S) remain in regular coordination through a joint committee comprising B Y Vijayendra , R Ashoka , and Union Minister Pralhad Joshi , with discussions focused on upcoming local body and Assembly by-polls.

Separately, Agrawal criticised the Congress over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, alleging attempts to influence the process. He claimed the BJP had complained about Booth Level Officers (BLOs) not conducting door-to-door visits despite Election Commission instructions and warned the party would review its response if irregularities persisted.
