BJP Telangana President Ramchander Rao Accuses Owaisi of Misleading Public on Voter Roll Revision
Telangana BJP president N. Ramchander Rao on Friday strongly criticised AIMIM chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi for his remarks on the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, alleging that the AIMIM leader was attempting to create unnecessary confusion among voters.
Responding to Owaisi's comments that only those holding BJP membership cards would ultimately find a place in official records, Ramchander Rao dismissed the allegation as baseless and misleading. He said the SIR exercise is an official election-related process conducted by government-appointed Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and has no connection with any political party.
Addressing the media, the BJP leader alleged that opposition parties were trying to politicise the voter list revision process ahead of the upcoming Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections. According to him, false narratives were being spread to misinform citizens and create distrust about a routine electoral exercise.
Ramchander Rao claimed that the growing support for the BJP in Telangana had unsettled parties such as AIMIM, BRS and Congress, prompting them to make what he described as irresponsible statements. He maintained that Owaisi was fully aware that the revision process is carried out by government officials and not by any political organisation.
He also pointed out that AIMIM itself has established help desks and awareness mechanisms to assist people participating in the revision exercise, which, he argued, demonstrates the party's understanding of the process. Given this, Ramchander Rao said, Owaisi's public criticism of the exercise appeared contradictory and politically motivated.
The BJP leader further asserted that AIMIM was attempting to generate fear among voters because it anticipated electoral setbacks in the forthcoming GHMC polls. He accused both Congress and BRS of similarly spreading misinformation regarding the voter roll revision exercise.
The controversy stems from remarks made by Owaisi on Thursday while criticising the Centre's approach to citizenship verification. The Hyderabad MP alleged that the government's policies were creating an atmosphere of exclusion and remarked sarcastically that by 2030, authorities might recognise only those with BJP membership cards as legitimate citizens.
Owaisi had also argued that citizenship documents alone should not be treated as proof of nationality for most Indians, noting that such documentation requirements primarily apply to specific categories of citizenship acquisition. His comments drew a sharp response from the BJP, which accused him of fuelling unfounded fears among the public.
