India ended a two-decade wait for a place in the AFC U20 Asian Cup main tournament, producing a confident 3-0 victory over Bangladesh in their final qualifying match in Tashkent on Sunday.

The result lifted India to six points from three matches and kept their qualification hopes alive. Their fate, however, depended on the later Group B clash between Syria and hosts Uzbekistan. Syria’s 0-3 defeat to Uzbekistan eventually confirmed India’s place as one of the seven best runners-up from the eight qualifying groups.

India last featured in the AFC U20 Asian Cup main tournament in 2006. The return marks a significant achievement for the young side coached by Mahesh Gawali, who will now prepare his team for the continental stage in China.

India took control of the decisive match through Danny Meitei Laishram, who opened the scoring in the 25th minute. Danny’s pressure forced Bangladesh into an error, allowing Hateem Ali to win possession before the striker combined with the attack and eventually found Danny inside the box. He kept his composure to finish clinically.

The Blue Colts continued to dictate the tempo after taking the lead, with Bangladesh struggling to create clear openings.

India doubled their advantage in the 60th minute. A long throw was flicked on by Rishikanta, and Vishal Yadav produced an acrobatic finish to beat goalkeeper Raj Chowdhury.

Bangladesh tried to respond with greater aggression, but India remained organised defensively.

Gawali introduced Md Arbash and Prashan Jajo in the 72nd minute, and the substitution quickly paid dividends. Arbash completed a flowing team move in the 79th minute with a powerful left-footed strike into the roof of the net.

India comfortably protected their three-goal lead in the closing stages, completing a memorable campaign and securing their long-awaited return to Asia’s U20 elite.

The AFC U20 Asian Cup 2027 will be held in China from March 24 to April 10.
