Bollywood Actor Imran Khan Asked to Leave India by October 28 After Joining CEC Protest
Bollywood actor Imran Khan, an American citizen, has been directed by Mumbai Police to leave India by October 28 for allegedly violating provisions of the Immigration and Foreigners Act after participating in a political protest in Mumbai last week.
The notice follows the actor’s participation in an agitation at August Kranti Maidan on October 10, where protesters demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Khan was briefly detained during the demonstration, which was organised in support of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP).
Police officials said the actor had been served a formal notice and had received a copy. Further administrative procedures are underway. Khan was unavailable for comment.
The action came after former BJP MP Kirit Somaiya lodged a complaint seeking action against the actor, arguing that foreign nationals should not participate in political protests on Indian soil. Somaiya welcomed the police notice on Thursday and demanded similar action against others allegedly involved in such activities.
“There are thousands of Imran Khans in India. They want to live here and defame the country,” Somaiya told reporters, calling for the deportation of others he accused of engaging in similar activities.
The BJP leader said he had approached Union government immigration authorities, the Airport Authority and Mumbai Police following the protest. He also sought the intervention of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and called for an investigation into how long Khan had held US citizenship.
Khan, 43, is the nephew of Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan and has appeared in films including “I Hate Luv Storys” (2010) and “Mere Brother Ki Dulhan” (2011). He recently made a cameo appearance in “Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos”, a film backed by Aamir Khan.
After the October 10 demonstration, a video showed Imran Khan being escorted towards a police vehicle as a reporter asked about his participation. “I have no demands. I am not part of any organisation,” he said.
The notice places the actor’s immigration status at the centre of a controversy arising from a protest over the Election Commission’s functioning. However, the allegations against him and the legal basis for the action remain matters requiring clarification from the authorities.
