Border, Culture, Defence and Ecology Unite in Vibrant Village Programme
In a unique effort to connect young Indians with the country's remote frontier regions, the Viksit Vibrant Village Programme (VVVP) 2026 – Phase II is providing participants with first-hand exposure to border culture, national security, environmental conservation and community life . The initiative, organised under MY Bharat and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports , aims to foster national integration while encouraging youth to understand the strategic and socio-cultural significance of India's border villages.
The second day of the programme in the picturesque Spiti Valley combined wellness, learning and cultural experiences. Participants began their day with activities focused on physical fitness and mindfulness before enjoying a traditional Himalayan breakfast that included Thukpa , a popular local delicacy. The experience offered a glimpse into the lifestyle and culinary traditions of communities living in high-altitude border regions.
A key highlight of the day was a visit to the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) Battalion Base Camp , where participants interacted with Commandant Sunil Kumar and other personnel. The visit featured detailed weapon demonstrations, operational briefings and sports activities, providing valuable insights into the preparedness, discipline and responsibilities of forces guarding India's borders. The interaction helped participants understand the challenges faced by security personnel working in extreme weather conditions and difficult terrain. Lunch and high tea were also hosted by the ITBP.
The programme also emphasized environmental awareness through an informative session conducted by the local Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) . Participants learned about the region's unique flora and fauna, biodiversity conservation efforts and the importance of protecting the fragile Himalayan ecosystem. The session highlighted the growing need for sustainable development and ecological stewardship in mountain regions that are increasingly vulnerable to climate change.
Later, the group visited the historic Key Monastery , one of the most significant Buddhist institutions in the Himalayas. The visit provided an opportunity to explore the region's rich spiritual traditions, centuries-old heritage and cultural legacy, deepening participants' understanding of life in the border areas of Himachal Pradesh.
The day concluded with a traditional dinner featuring local favourites such as momos and soup , further showcasing the hospitality and cultural richness of Himalayan communities.
The broader programme has selected 500 MY Bharat volunteers from across India through a nationwide competition that drew participation from over three lakh youth . Spread across border villages in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Ladakh , the initiative complements the Government's Vibrant Villages Programme , which seeks to improve infrastructure, connectivity, livelihoods and public services in frontier regions. By blending cultural immersion, defence exposure and environmental education, the programme is helping create a generation of informed young citizens while strengthening the vision of a developed, resilient and vibrant border India .
