Brazil’s presidential election will see President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva face right-wing challenger Flávio Bolsonaro in a closely contested first round, with final polls showing the race narrowing and a runoff increasingly central to the contest.

Lula, 80, is seeking a fourth, non-consecutive term, while Flávio Bolsonaro, 45, is attempting to extend the political legacy of his father, former president Jair Bolsonaro. The latest Datafolha poll put Lula at 45% and Flávio at 42% of valid votes, leaving the outcome of the first round uncertain.

Under Brazil’s electoral system, a candidate needs more than 50% of valid votes to win the presidency outright. If neither reaches that threshold, the top two candidates will contest an October 25 runoff.

Lula has made Brazilian sovereignty and opposition to foreign interference key themes of his campaign, particularly amid US President Donald Trump’s interest in the election. Trump has not formally endorsed Flávio but has said he is watching the vote “very closely”.

Flávio has campaigned on tougher security policies, fiscal austerity and concerns over the cost of living. His candidacy has also been affected by scrutiny over an investigation linked to financing for the biopic 'Dark Horse', about his father. The film was bankrolled by jailed banker Daniel Vorcaro, who is being investigated in a major financial scandal.

Jair Bolsonaro, a close Trump ally, is serving a 27-year sentence after being convicted over an attempt to overturn his defeat in the 2022 presidential election. Lula defeated him by just 1.8 percentage points in that contest.

The 2026 race has been marked by sharp political divisions, personal attacks and an intense social media battle, including the use of AI-generated images and videos.

Lula has urged voters to “defeat the far right”, while Flávio has portrayed the election as a choice over Brazil’s economic direction and security. Supporters on both sides have highlighted concerns ranging from the cost of living to Brazil’s relationship with the United States.

Nearly 160 million registered voters are due to participate in Sunday’s election, which will also decide lawmakers, governors and some senators. The presidential result could determine whether Brazil remains under Lula’s left-wing leadership or shifts toward the right under Bolsonaro’s son.
