Brazil Held 1-1 by Morocco in World Cup Opener as Vinícius Júnior Saves a Point
Five time champions Brazil were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against a sharp and aggressive Morocco in their opening World Cup Group C clash on Saturday, after a dramatic contest at MetLife Stadium.
Morocco began with remarkable intensity, dominating early exchanges and registering a flurry of attacks. Their pressure paid off in the 21st minute when Ismael Saibari produced a composed finish, lifting the ball over goalkeeper Alisson Becker to give Morocco a deserved lead.
Brazil, visibly unsettled in the opening phase, struggled to find rhythm as Morocco continued to press high and create chances. Head coach Carlo Ancelotti admitted his side looked nervous and imbalanced early on.
However, the response came quickly. In the 32nd minute, Vinícius Júnior combined brilliantly on the left flank with Bruno Guimarães, glided past defenders and unleashed a powerful right footed strike to level the score at 1-1, bringing Brazil back into the contest.
Morocco remained dangerous throughout, with their midfield and attacking transitions continuing to trouble Brazil’s back line. Even in stoppage time, they nearly regained the lead when Alisson was forced into a crucial reaction save to deny a close range follow up effort.
Brazil’s star forward Neymar , still recovering from injury, was absent from the squad, leaving further questions about Brazil’s attacking depth.
After the match, Vinícius Júnior acknowledged the team’s slow start but stressed the importance of improving ball control and movement in upcoming fixtures. Morocco coach Mohamed Ouahbi, meanwhile, praised his side’s performance but remained cautious, saying they must avoid complacency.
The result extends Brazil’s strong record in World Cup openers, but also raises concerns about consistency as they chase their first World Cup title since 2002. Morocco, on the other hand, will take confidence from a disciplined and fearless display against one of the tournament favourites.
Both teams now turn their attention to their next Group C fixtures, with qualification still wide open.
