Brazil or ASEAN Cup? India Faces a Huge Footballing Dilemma

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) is facing a major scheduling dilemma after India’s campaign in the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup was found to clash with a proposed high-profile friendly against Brazil in Kolkata on October 3.

The ASEAN Cup is scheduled to be held in Indonesia from September 24 to October 3, with India drawn in Group A of Division 1 alongside Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. India will play three group-stage matches and could feature in the final, which is scheduled for the same day as the Brazil friendly.

The AIFF executive committee, at its August 6 meeting, decided that India would participate in both competitions and proposed sending separate squads for the two events. However, FIFA regulations have now complicated that plan.

An AIFF official said the federation was awaiting a response from FIFA on whether the arrangement would be permitted.

Under FIFA regulations, a participating country cannot field an Under-23 or second-string team in a FIFA-sanctioned competition. As a result, India cannot simply send a reserve side to the ASEAN Cup while its senior team takes on Brazil in Kolkata.

The AIFF's decision to pursue both fixtures had also faced opposition from former India captain Bhaichung Bhutia, who said the country should field its strongest available team in the FIFA ASEAN Cup.

The federation has nevertheless maintained that the Brazil match represents a unique opportunity for Indian players to gain valuable experience against one of the world's strongest football nations. The proposed friendly would also fall during the FIFA International Match Window.

The AIFF is keen to retain the Brazil fixture while exploring additional international friendlies to ensure the national team gets sufficient exposure. However, withdrawing from the ASEAN Cup, if it becomes necessary, could lead to regulatory action, including a financial penalty.

The scheduling problem may extend into November as well, with proposed friendlies against New Zealand potentially clashing with the SAFF Championship.

For now, the AIFF is waiting for FIFA's decision as it attempts to balance India's competitive commitments with the opportunity to face Brazil on home soil.
