BRICS Agriculture Meet in Indore to Focus on Food Security and Farmer Welfare
The five-day BRICS agriculture meeting will commence in Indore on Tuesday under India’s presidency, bringing together member nations to deliberate on key global agricultural priorities, including food security, farmer welfare, climate-resilient farming, and digital agriculture .
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said on Monday that the discussions will address emerging challenges in the agriculture sector, with a special focus on strengthening cooperation among BRICS countries in the Global South . He underlined that the grouping serves as a strong collective voice for developing nations in addressing agricultural vulnerabilities and ensuring equitable food systems.
The agenda includes a three-day Agriculture Working Group meeting from June 9, followed by a two-day BRICS ministerial meeting from June 12. The discussions will span global agricultural trade, supply chain resilience, nutrition, research collaboration, artificial intelligence in farming, robotics, and smart agriculture technologies .
Chouhan noted that BRICS countries collectively account for a significant share of the world’s agricultural ecosystem, including a large portion of global farmland and smallholder farmers, making the platform crucial for shaping policies that impact food security and farmer livelihoods worldwide .
The grouping, which includes major emerging economies such as Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and newer members, is expected to adopt a joint declaration after consensus among agriculture ministers.
India has previously hosted BRICS agriculture engagements in 2012, 2016, and 2021 , and officials say this edition is expected to further deepen cooperation on sustainable agriculture and innovation-driven farming systems.
Chouhan also highlighted that the meeting coincides with Madhya Pradesh’s declaration of 2026 as the Agriculture Welfare Year , adding symbolic significance to the deliberations hosted in the state’s financial capital.
