Buffaloes Charge at Tigress, Save Man From Fatal Attack in Madhya Pradesh

A 36-year-old man narrowly escaped death after being attacked by a tigress in the Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve (BTR) in Madhya Pradesh, with his two buffaloes unexpectedly coming to his rescue and forcing the big cat to retreat.

The incident occurred on Wednesday in the Panpatha core area of the reserve when Ramnaresh Singh had entered the forest while searching for his cattle. According to BTR field director Anupam Sahay, Singh came across a tigress that was reportedly moving through the area with her cub.

The tigress suddenly attacked Singh and injured his hand. As the animal appeared ready to drag him deeper into the forest, his buffaloes charged towards the predator. The sudden intervention reportedly forced the tigress to abandon the attack and flee into the forest.

Recalling the frightening encounter after receiving treatment, Singh said his animals had saved his life. He said he feared the worst when the tigress grabbed him and believed he would be dragged away had the buffaloes not intervened.

Singh was later found by his companions lying below a slope. They provided first aid, bandaged his injured hand and helped control the bleeding before forest officials took him to the government hospital in Manpur.

Sahay said Singh was admitted to the hospital and his condition was reported to be normal. The forest department also provided him with ₹3,000 in immediate financial assistance.

Following the incident, authorities have stepped up monitoring and surveillance in the affected area to prevent further human-animal encounters and track the movement of the tigress and her cub.

The episode has drawn attention to the unpredictable risks faced by people entering forest areas, as well as the unusual role played by Singh's buffaloes in helping him escape a potentially fatal wildlife attack.
