Quality standards are essential for building safer, more reliable products and services while supporting sustainable development, experts said at an event organised to mark World Standards Day 2026. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Vijayawada branch, in collaboration with the School of Planning and Architecture (SPA), Vijayawada, organised Manak Mahotsav, bringing together more than 450 representatives from industries and educational institutions.

The programme was conducted under the theme ‘A Shared Vision for a Better World: Affordable Clean Energy’, focusing on the importance of common quality benchmarks in improving industrial performance, encouraging innovation and advancing sustainable development. The discussions highlighted how standardisation can contribute to safer products, dependable services and the wider availability of affordable energy solutions.

Addressing the gathering, Prem Sajani Ratnal, Director and Head Scientist of BIS Vijayawada, emphasised the need for coordinated efforts among industries, institutions and the public to achieve sustainable development goals. She underlined the importance of collective responsibility in promoting quality standards and ensuring their effective implementation across sectors.

Professor Dr Ramesh Srikonda, Director of SPA Vijayawada, joined other academicians in explaining the significance of standardisation in improving quality, strengthening safety measures and supporting technological progress. Their observations highlighted the role of educational institutions and industries in creating greater awareness of established standards and encouraging their adoption.

Experts from IIT Tirupati, UltraTech Cement and PVP Siddhartha Institute of Technology, among other organisations, delivered presentations on technical subjects. Their sessions explored different aspects of standardisation and its relevance to industrial practices, quality assurance and technological advancement.

Student-led cultural performances added colour to the celebrations, while individuals who contributed to the implementation of quality standards, innovation, Standards Clubs and institutional cooperation were felicitated for their efforts.

A major attraction was the exhibition of three-dimensional models of ancient Indian temples created by SPA students. The displays offered a glimpse into India's architectural heritage, traditional construction methods and engineering skills, highlighting the ingenuity behind historic structures.

The organisers said the event aimed to strengthen public understanding of quality, safety and reliability and encourage wider acceptance of standards in everyday life. The programme also reinforced the need for stronger partnerships between industries and academic institutions to promote innovation, responsible practices and long-term sustainable development.
