Burnt Cash Row: Parliament to Take Up Justice Varma Report During Monsoon Session
The impeachment proceedings against Justice Yashwant Varma are set to move into a decisive phase, with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla announcing that the report of the three member inquiry committee probing the allegations against the judge will be tabled during Parliament's Monsoon Session , which begins on July 20 .
Speaking to reporters in Kolkata on Saturday, Birla said the report has been prepared in accordance with the Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968 , and will be placed before the Lok Sabha during the session that runs until August 13 . He said Members of Parliament will decide the future course of action after the report is presented.
The inquiry was initiated after 146 Lok Sabha MPs from across party lines submitted a motion seeking Justice Varma's removal. Among the signatories were senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi , reflecting rare bipartisan support for the move.
The proceedings stem from the discovery of a large quantity of burnt currency notes at Justice Varma's official residence following a fire incident while he was serving in the Delhi High Court . The incident triggered serious allegations, leading to judicial and parliamentary scrutiny.
The committee currently comprises Supreme Court Justice Aravind Kumar , senior advocate B V Acharya , and Bombay High Court Chief Justice Shree Chandrashekhar , who replaced Madras High Court Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava after the panel was reconstituted earlier this year.
Although Justice Varma has resigned from the Allahabad High Court, President Droupadi Murmu has not yet accepted his resignation, meaning the constitutional process for his removal remains open.
Earlier, then Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna ordered an in-house inquiry, whose findings recommended further action. Justice Varma initially declined to resign, prompting the report to be forwarded to the President and the Prime Minister. The Supreme Court later dismissed his challenge to the recommendation.
