The California State Assembly has recognised November 8, 2026, as Diwali Day, encouraging people across the state to participate in celebrations marking the Festival of Lights. The resolution, HR 137, was introduced by Assembly members Darshana Patel and Ash Kalra and was adopted on August 20.

The resolution also expressed its deepest respect for Indian Americans and the Indian diaspora in California and around the world. It highlighted Diwali's importance to Indian American and South Asian American communities and recognised the festival's significance for Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists and Jains.

The Assembly said it recognises this year's Diwali festival on Sunday, November 8, 2026, and encouraged Californians to join the celebrations. The date is also listed as Diwali on the 2026 holiday calendar of the Consulate General of India in Los Angeles.

According to the resolution, Diwali or Deepavali means “a row of lamps” and is a festival that brings families, friends and communities together through traditions centred on generosity, unity, joy, appreciation and reflection.

The resolution described Diwali as the Festival of Lights, when homes are illuminated with candles, oil lanterns and clay lamps. It also noted the festival's association with themes including good health, wealth, knowledge, peace and prosperity.

The measure further highlighted Diwali's broader message of the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil, connecting the celebration with overcoming struggles, embracing positivity, practising humility and upholding kindness.

For those who celebrate, the resolution said Diwali is also a time to focus on knowledge, growth, happiness, wisdom, kindness and transformation.

The recognition comes after California enacted legislation in 2025 designating Diwali as an official state holiday, underscoring the state's growing institutional recognition of the festival and the communities that celebrate it.
