Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney Arrives in India for Key Talks

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney arrived in India for an official visit from February 26 to March 7 , aiming to strengthen bilateral ties and revive cooperation after relations were strained during the previous government’s tenure. The visit focuses on enhancing collaboration in trade, investment, and emerging technologies.

According to a statement from the Canadian Prime Minister’s Office , Carney will begin his visit in Mumbai , where he will meet prominent business leaders before travelling to New Delhi . He is scheduled to hold high-level talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 2 . The discussions are expected to cover trade expansion, economic cooperation, and strategic partnerships.

A major priority of the visit is to accelerate progress on the “Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement” (CEPA) between India and Canada. Both sides aim to deepen engagement in key sectors such as clean energy, artificial intelligence, defence, and advanced technology , creating new avenues for investment and collaboration.

The Canadian statement highlighted that India is one of the fastest-growing economies in the world and a significant global hub for trade and technology. In 2024 , India became Canada’s seventh-largest trading partner , with bilateral trade reaching $30.8 billion .

During the G20 Summit in Johannesburg last November , Prime Minister Modi and Mark Carney met and discussed strengthening economic relations. At that meeting, they set a target to increase bilateral trade to $50 billion by 2030 . Prime Minister Modi emphasised that there are substantial opportunities to expand investment and trade cooperation between the two nations.

The visit is widely seen as a step toward overcoming past differences and building a renewed partnership focused on long-term economic growth and strategic engagement.
