Centre Grants Rare Post-Retirement Extension to SPG Director Alok Sharma
The Central government has approved a nine-month extension for Alok Sharma , Director of the Special Protection Group (SPG) , enabling him to continue leading the elite security force responsible for safeguarding the Prime Minister and members of the PM's immediate family residing at the official residence.
An order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training stated that the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved Sharma's extension from July 1, 2026, to March 31, 2027 . The extension was granted as Sharma was scheduled to retire at the end of June upon attaining the superannuation age of 60 years , allowing him to continue heading the elite security force beyond his retirement date.
The government granted the extension by relaxing provisions under Fundamental Rule 56(d) and the All India Services (Death-cum-Retirement Benefit) Rules, 1958 , which generally do not permit officers to remain in service beyond the age of 60, except in select strategic and security-related positions.
A 1991-batch IPS officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre , Sharma took charge as SPG Director in November 2023 . Before assuming the top post, he served in several senior roles within the organisation, including as Additional Director General and Inspector General , gaining extensive experience in high-level VIP protection and security management.
Over the course of his career, Sharma has held a number of important assignments in the Uttar Pradesh Police. He has served in leadership positions across the state and was associated with police training and administrative functions before moving into central security responsibilities. His long experience in both field policing and specialised security operations contributed to his elevation to the SPG's top position.
The SPG is regarded as one of India's most specialised security agencies, tasked with providing close protection to the Prime Minister and coordinating security arrangements during official travel and public engagements. Sharma's extension is expected to ensure continuity in the leadership of the force at a time when security challenges remain a key concern for the country's top leadership.
