India's women's hockey team delivered a clinical performance to defeat hosts New Zealand 2-0 in the final and win the FIH Women's Nations Cup in Auckland on Sunday, securing promotion to the FIH Women's Pro League for next season.

The victory marked India's second Nations Cup title after their triumph in the tournament's inaugural edition in 2022 and capped an unbeaten campaign in impressive fashion.

India struck early through Navneet Kaur , who converted a penalty corner in the fourth minute to give her side the perfect start. The visitors continued to put pressure on the hosts and doubled their lead in the 15th minute when Sunelita Toppo expertly deflected Deepika's attempt from another penalty corner.

With a two-goal cushion, India shifted focus to maintaining their defensive structure. New Zealand enjoyed long spells of possession and tried to force their way back into the contest, but the Indian defence remained disciplined and organised throughout.

The hosts' best opportunity came from a penalty corner early in the final quarter, but veteran goalkeeper Savita produced a crucial save to preserve India's advantage. From there, India comfortably managed the game to seal a memorable victory.

The title was the culmination of a dominant tournament run. India defeated the United States (3-2) , Japan (2-1) and Uruguay (3-2) in the group stage before thrashing Chile 6-0 in the semi-final.

Individual honours also followed. Lalremsiami was named Player of the Match in the final, while Deepika finished as the tournament's joint highest scorer with six goals alongside USA's Ashley Sessa .

To celebrate the achievement, Hockey India announced a cash reward of ₹3 lakh for each player and ₹1.5 lakh for every member of the support staff.

More importantly, the triumph ensures India's return to the Pro League, providing the team another opportunity to compete regularly against the world's top hockey nations.
