Chennai Airport Chaos: Closed Gates Leave Hundreds of International Flyers Stranded

Hundreds of international passengers were left stranded for hours at Chennai International Airport on Tuesday after several entry gates at the international terminal reportedly remained closed during the busiest morning departure window, triggering massive queues, operational bottlenecks and fears of missed flights.

The disruption occurred between 5 am and 11 am, when around 17 international flights were scheduled to depart for destinations including London, Dubai, Singapore, Doha and Myanmar. As one of southern India's busiest international gateways, Chennai Airport handles a large volume of passengers travelling to the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Europe and other global destinations, making the early morning period one of its busiest.

According to airport sources, the international terminal is equipped with 12 passenger entry points, including 10 double-sided access gates. However, Gates 5, 8, 9 and 10 allegedly remained locked during peak operational hours, forcing travellers to enter through only a handful of access points and creating long queues that stretched up to the parking area.

Many passengers reported waiting for more than an hour just to enter the terminal. Since airport regulations permit entry only three hours before departure, the delay left travellers scrambling to complete check-in, baggage drop, customs clearance, immigration and security screening within a limited timeframe.

The anxiety intensified as boarding announcements began nearly an hour before scheduled departures while many passengers were still outside the terminal or waiting in entry queues. E-Visa holders reportedly faced additional document verification, adding to concerns about missing their flights.

Aviation experts note that terminal entry gates serve as the first capacity checkpoint in airport operations. Any restriction at this stage can quickly cascade into delays across check-in, immigration and security, even if those facilities are functioning normally. Recent studies have also highlighted the importance of dynamic queue management and adequate staffing to prevent congestion during peak travel hours.

Passengers claimed that similar administrative bottlenecks are uncommon at major aviation hubs such as Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad, where multiple entry gates are generally kept operational during busy departure periods. Some frequent flyers said the recurring delays have prompted travellers from the region to increasingly choose Mumbai as their preferred transit hub for long-haul flights to the United States and the United Kingdom.

The airport is currently undergoing a major modernisation programme aimed at expanding passenger handling capacity, with the project's completion now targeted for December 2026.

Affected passengers have urged the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to issue clear operational directives to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and terminal authorities to keep all available entry gates open during peak hours, arguing that the move would significantly ease congestion and ensure smoother passenger movement.
