Chennai, Nilgiris Among 15 Districts to Receive Heavy Rainfall as IMD Issues Alert

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall in 15 districts of Tamil Nadu from Sunday , with the southwest monsoon continuing to remain active over the region .

According to the latest bulletin issued by the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai , heavy rain is likely in several parts of western and southern Tamil Nadu, including Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Theni, Dindigul, Madurai and Kanyakumari districts . The forecast also covers the Ghat areas of Virudhunagar, Tenkasi and Tirunelveli districts .

In northern Tamil Nadu, the weather department has predicted heavy rainfall in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Kancheepuram and Chengalpattu districts during the same period.

The IMD has also issued a warning for fishermen, stating that squally winds with speeds of 45–55 kmph are likely over parts of the southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal from June 29 . Fishermen have been advised to exercise caution while venturing into the sea.

An ocean current alert has been issued for coastal areas including Nagapattinam, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Karaikal and Ramanathapuram , with authorities advised to remain cautious during harbour and marine operations.

The meteorological department said that maximum temperatures are expected to remain near normal across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal until June 30.

Meanwhile, Chennai and its surrounding areas are likely to witness moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning on Saturday, according to the latest weather update.
