In a significant boost to India's maritime infrastructure, Kamarajar Port has achieved 18-metre draft capability , becoming only the second major port in the country after Visakhapatnam Port to reach this benchmark. The milestone is expected to strengthen India's cargo handling capacity, improve operational efficiency and enhance the country's position in global shipping.

The achievement follows the successful completion of Capital Dredging Phase VI , a major infrastructure project undertaken by Kamarajar Port Limited (KPL). The enhanced draft enables the port to receive Capesize vessels , among the world's largest bulk cargo ships, significantly expanding its handling capabilities.

With an operational draft of 18 metres , the port can now accommodate ships carrying cargo loads of up to 1,70,000 Deadweight Tonnage (DWT). Larger vessels transport more cargo in a single voyage, helping reduce freight costs, improve turnaround efficiency and make Indian exports and imports more competitive.

The development is expected to benefit industries dependent on bulk cargo movement, including coal, iron ore, limestone, fertilisers and other raw materials . By handling bigger ships directly, the port can minimise transshipment requirements and improve supply chain efficiency.

Located on the Coromandel Coast near Chennai , Kamarajar Port is one of India's key gateways for international trade. Over the years, it has expanded beyond its original focus on coal handling to become a multi-cargo port serving sectors such as automobiles, containers, liquid cargo and project cargo.

The latest upgrade further reinforces the government's emphasis on modernising port infrastructure and improving logistics under its broader maritime development strategy. Enhanced deep-water capabilities are expected to attract more global shipping lines, increase cargo volumes and strengthen India's role in regional and international maritime trade.

With only Visakhapatnam Port previously offering an 18-metre draft among India's major ports, Kamarajar Port's latest achievement marks another important step in building world-class port infrastructure capable of supporting the country's growing trade ambitions.
