China Shock 2.0: Europe Faces Rising Pressure from Surge in Chinese Exports

Europe is increasingly grappling with the impact of what economists describe as “China Shock 2.0,” as a surge in Chinese exports intensifies pressure on the continent’s manufacturing sector and prompts calls for stronger trade protections.

Despite years of U.S. tariffs and trade restrictions , China’s industrial dominance remains largely intact. Instead of relying on the American market, Chinese manufacturers have redirected exports toward Europe and other Asian economies. The shift helped China post a record USD 1.2 trillion trade surplus last year, underscoring the strength of its export-driven economy.

European leaders are now warning that an influx of low-cost Chinese products could undermine domestic industries. French President Emmanuel Macron recently said Chinese exports were “literally killing” parts of European industry, reflecting growing concerns across the bloc.

Unlike the original China Shock of the early 2000s, which centered on low-cost goods such as textiles and furniture, the latest wave is driven by high-value sectors including electric vehicles (EVs), batteries, solar panels, industrial machinery and advanced technologies . This places Chinese firms in direct competition with Europe’s core manufacturing industries.

Germany, Europe’s largest economy, has emerged as one of the most affected countries. German manufacturers are facing increasing competition from Chinese rivals in automobiles, machinery and chemicals , contributing to economic stagnation in recent years.

The issue is expected to feature prominently in discussions among G7 nations , with policymakers considering measures ranging from higher tariffs to coordinated industrial strategies. Analysts warn that unless China boosts domestic consumption and reduces reliance on exports, trade tensions could escalate further.

As Europe weighs its response, China Shock 2.0 is rapidly becoming a defining challenge for the continent’s trade, industrial policy and economic competitiveness .
